Wash-off technique

• The picture is drawn in pencil on 140lb watercolour paper. This can be done after the next stage if desired.

• The paper is covered with a pale watercolour wash. This makes the next stage easier and creates a unifying base for finishing the picture.

• Chinese white or gouache is painted over areas which are to remain light.

• When this is completely dry the whole picture is covered with indian or acrylic ink.

• When dry, the whole paper is washed under a tap and brushed gently until all the gouache and its cover of ink is removed.

• The paper is taped down on a board as for stretching, and dried.

• The remaining white areas are painted with watercolour.
